Gluten Free High Fiber Cereals (1)The gluten free diet has swept across the nation. It seems like every other person you meet is trying out this new fad, whether on their own or per direction from their doctor. Maybe someday gluten will be completely eradicated from our food sources, but for now finding gluten-free foods is a must for many people.

Before we jump into talking about some the best high fiber gluten free cereals specifically, let’s discuss what gluten actually is.

What is Gluten?

The dictionary definition is-

“a substance present in cereal grains, especially wheat, that is responsible for the elastic texture of dough. A mixture of two proteins, it causes illness in people with celiac disease.”

For those of you that may have just recently found out about your own gluten allergy, I know what you are probably thinking (especially if you are a cereal lover!) “cereal grains!? Oh no! This is the end of my cereal eating days altogether! Dont fret however! There are many cereals out there that are made just to serve you!

The Gluten Allergy

First of all, studies estimate that about 15% of the US population is actually gluten intolerant. That is quite a few people at almost 48 million people! You are definitely not alone and their are a lot of resources out there for you to use (see bottom of page).

The best way to determine if you have a gluten allergy is to eliminate it from your diet. It may be annoying to have to do it this way, but it is a great way to figure it out for yourself without the expensive medical bills. However, it might be best to first check with your doctor to be sure you do not have Celiac Disease.

Honestly, my advice is to see what works for you first by eliminating certain things from your diet. It is super annoying to always have to read the standard “but check with your doctor first” caveat that is attached to every piece
of medical advice on the internet. While I do understand the necessity to protect yourself (which I did here as well…) doctors definitely do not want to see you for every minor problem you are having.

Reading advice online about anything related to health tends to cause a lot of anxiety so:

  • Take a deep breath.
  • Take things one step at a time.
  • Make changes SLOWLY over time.
  • Keep reading for some awesome gluten free cereals that are high in fiber as well!

Anyways, read on for more information about why gluten and fiber often don’t get along!

Gluten and Fiber

Going Gluten Free often involves getting rid of a lot of foods from your diet. Unfortunately, lots of those foods are the foods that are high in fiber, so you have to adjust your diet accordingly. You don’t want to get rid of fiber of course, so you need to be able to find foods that fit all of your dietary needs.

Grain is a major culprit in gluten and is one of the first items to go when you start a gluten free diet. Don’t make the mistake of switching to other white breads and regular old pasta as this isn’t a good idea for your diet!

Instead, make the switch to other non starchy foods like beans to get that high fiber while still satisfying the gluten free requirement. Beans are absolutely a super food when it comes to the high fiber diet as they are naturally gluten free, and extremely high in fiber and protein. Eat them weekly, even daily, and you will reap the benefits of this amazing food.
